Post-concussion syndrome (PCS) is a form of mild (sometimes moderate) traumatic brain injury (TBI) that occurs in patients of all age groups and is a significant public health issue. In the United States, 1.5 million TBIs occur annually, 75% of TBIs are classified as mild, and costs are generated of $17 billion each year. Most patients that suffer from PCS will have spontaneous resolution of symptoms, but for some patients, symptoms may linger and negatively affect daily cognitive function. PCS is considered a constellation of symptoms seen most often in prolonged mild TBI concussions. Symptoms typically include headache, fatigue, vision changes, disturbances in balance, confusion, dizziness, insomnia, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and difficulty with concentration. Numerous studies have shown neuroprotective effects of laser therapy (AKA photobiomodulation therapy or PBMT) in many neurological disorders and some studies showed the benefits of red and NIR applications in vivo in animals with experimental TBI. Initial clinical studies of PBMT for persistent TBI symptoms in humans have been encouraging. Join BIOFLEX’s Medical Director, Dr. David Kunashko for an in-depth review of PCS the mechanisms of how PBMT can help the symptoms of PCS including peer reviewed research, optimal parameters, treatment plans and approaches using BIOFLEX professional Laser Therapy devices.
