Fred Kahn, MD, FRCS(C)
We design and manufacture our BioFlex Laser Therapy Systems based on the needs of our dedicated team of clinicians who on a weekly basis are assessing over 70 new patients and administering more than 1,200 individualized treatments between our two Toronto based clinics. Supporting our clinicians is a team of engineers who are constantly looking for ways to improve the therapeutic capabilities of our systems. To date there are over 1,000 independent clinicians in over 50 countries utilizing our systems to restore the health and quality of life for their patients; a number that is growing very quickly.
Fred Kahn, a physician, sustained a severe rotator cuff injury in a skiing accident. Aware of the shortcomings of surgical repair for this condition, he utilized a primitive European Laser Therapy device in order to resolve this problem. Almost instantly, he obtained relief from the pain and with continuing treatment was able to restore a normal range of motion of the shoulder. This stimulated Dr. Kahn to explore the possibility of developing more sophisticated devices to treat a more extensive range of clinical conditions.
Meditech International was founded by Dr. Kahn and incorporation was completed in 1992. A series of concept devices were developed under Dr. Kahn’s leadership at CATE, Centre of Technology and Education at Ryerson University in Toronto. Systems were simultaneously developed for utilization by healthcare professionals and for patient use at home.
A Research and Development laboratory was established at Ryerson University; this included engineers, basic researchers and clinicians.
Within the laboratory at Ryerson, the first Meditech Clinic was opened to treat a variety of medical conditions and establish appropriate therapeutic protocols. Many patients, including Ryerson staff, presented for treatment of conditions that had not been resolved by conventional therapies.
Meditech corporate headquarters, including the Laser Rehabilitation Centre, relocate to a freestanding facility at 411 Horner Avenue in Etobicoke, Ontario. Over the past fifteen years, this establishment has become the most comprehensive Laser Therapy Clinic in North America and is currently administering over 1500 patient treatments weekly.
A second Meditech Laser Rehabilitation Clinic opens in Central Downtown Toronto. This was carried out in order to enable business executives and their extensive staff to have access to Laser Therapy close to their place of work.
The Educational Centre was opened adjacent to the Etobicoke Clinic in order to establish a regular educational program. This was a significant step forward, enabling health care professionals to travel from around the world and attend an extensive program, incorporating all aspects of Laser Therapy including history, mechanisms of action, enhanced application, etc. The courses are held regularly at a minimum of once per month, however sometimes are conducted every two weeks. The company also occasionally hosts this type of event at offsite venues in San Diego, Calgary and a number of other major cities.
The 6000 square foot research, engineering and manufacturing department with state of the art instrumentation was added. Previously these functions had been carried out at a number of separate locations and bringing them together enabled a more coherent, focused approach. Specialists in photoelectronics, software, hardware and other specialized disciplines were now able to communicate directly and this collaboration has inspired innovations on a continuing basis. Laser Therapy is not a static technology and a cutting edge philosophy indoctrinates this energetic group.
