Osteoporosis is a disease that is characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue.

October 20th is World Osteoporosis Day (WOD), which is an initiative of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF). With activities in over 90 countries, World Osteoporosis Day is “dedicated to raising global awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease.”

According to the WOD website, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men (50 years and older) will suffer an osteoporotic fracture.

In fact, Osteoporosis Canada reports that ‘Twenty-eight per cent of women and 37% of men who suffer a hip fracture will die within the following year.’ Complications, such as pneumonia, causes death in these tragic cases.
