Whether you made $300 million dollars fighting or you just fell off a bike; a blow to the head may affect your brain’s white matter and impact cognition, memory and thinking abilities.

Here Are 5 Facts About Concussions

  1. You do not need to lose consciousness in order to experience a concussion.
  2. A concussion rarely has ‘visible’ brain structural injury.
  3. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a period of near full cognitive rest in the first 3 to 5 days after injury.
  4. People who have suffered a concussion in the past are more susceptible to experience severe symptoms following an additional episode such as dizziness, insomnia, Photophobia/hyperacusis, diplopia, chronic encephalopathy, and termed dementia pugilistica.
  5. Repeated concussions increase a person’s risk for dementia, Parkinson’s disease and depression, in later life.

Phototherapy

What is it?

Phototherapy is the use of light in the treatment of physical or mental illness.

How does it work?

An overall protective response is thought to occur with repeated light treatments. In addition to increasing cerebral blood flow, some researchers believe these light treatments reduce the oxidative damage and chronic inflammation that occurs in the brain after a concussion.

Concussions and Phototherapy:

Preliminary scientific research, including animal studies and case reports, along with the case studies suggest that Phototherapy or Cold Laser Therapy may be an effective treatment option for patients with post-concussion syndrome. However, larger controlled studies are warranted to establish this therapy as a viable option for some of the symptoms that patients experience following episodes of trauma to the brain.

While experimental at present, this technology may provide a therapeutic treatment option to a condition that is in dire need of a solution.
