Mention lower back pain, the images of disc herniation, nerve impingement and muscle spasm come
into mind. These are all known pain producers or are they?
Physiologically, pain is a nociceptive message that travels up the spinothalamic tract to the thalamus.
From there, part of it branches off to the Primary Sensory Cortex to register as pain sensation while the
rest go to the reticular formation and the hypothalamus.
